In May 2022, Trefoil awarded M a personal development grant amounting to £420 for the purpose of English tuition. The aim of the tuition was to develop M’s skills and confidence in reading and writing as he prepared for the move to secondary school.
The funding provided M the opportunity to attend 12 sessions and he embraced the experience, spending time on Saturday mornings and during the summer holidays to complete the sessions. M’s determination and hard work was evident as he was always the first in the door and ready to submit his homework.
“After the struggles of the last couple of years, it has been nice for us to start to do things like learn new words and put them in an A-Z book to show our progress in learning together.”
The transition from primary school to high school can be quite an overwhelming experience so having the sessions to reassure M of his capabilities and being able to learn in a different environment to school helped him gain confidence and look forward to high school.
“M has gained confidence in himself, which has helped him start high school in a more optimistic frame of mind.”
