In April 2021, Trefoil awarded The Miracle Foundation a grant of £5,000. This funding was used to deliver a bereavement and trauma support programme for children and young people, as the Miracle Foundation support children and young people who have experienced bereavement and trauma through counselling and arts therapies.
The main aims of the project were to assist children and young people in feeling less destressed, less isolated and generally better supported by providing a safe space for young people to recover and restore their mental and emotional well-being and health.
Over the course of the pandemic, the support service provided had to be adapted to an online and telephone service, while art therapy, individual and group face to face sessions became available as restrictions eased, giving young people the choice of how they would like to access the service. Through this adaptability, the Miracle Foundation was able to continue to deliver their life changing service to young people. The service not only helps the children or young people but also enormously improves the lives of the whole family.
The Miracle Foundation provided Trefoil with the following case study to demonstrate the impact of Trefoil’s funding and their support service for one young person.
“X was 16 years old when one day his best friend collapsed in class and died a sudden death. He found it very hard to cope with the loss of his best friend and started isolating himself from family and friends, stopped going to school and family relationships started breaking down. His Mother approached the Miracle Foundation for support as he was feeling suicidal due to his grief. He attended The Miracle Foundation for a total of 16 weeks; once a week for 50 minutes. This allowed him to explore his grief with one of our counsellors. During counselling, he started back at school again and talking to his friends more often. He felt he was able to talk more about his feelings to his friends without feeling judged. Since counselling, he has gone on to pass all his exams and is now studying to become a car mechanic at college.” ”
