An Adventure to the Lake District

In September 2021, Trefoil awarded an organisational grant of £3,318 to benefit a group of students with additional support needs from the north of Glasgow. The grant was used by a school to facilitate a three-day break for the pupils at an Outdoor Centre, in the Lake District.

The aim of the trip was to develop the individuals’ confidence and offer them a sense of independence to broaden their horizons.

It’s a truism that children with additional support needs rarely, if ever, have sleepovers with friends or leave the nest at all. Many are quite terrified at the thought. We were embarking on a new and exciting adventure.

The group were able to participate in a wide variety of adventurous activities including a hike through sub-alpine terrain and a zip-line through the forest was a particular highlight of the trip. There was also a physically demanding high ropes obstacles course and indoor climbing session that comprised a terrifying drop from height. These activities encouraged the boys to step outside their comfort zone but also embrace the freedom that comes with being able to simply play.

I think it was a good idea to bring us here.

It wasn’t all fun and games, there was also time for learning as the group were taught bush-craft skills such as building a shelter and how to make a fire safely. Both of which sound very fun and useful activities to learn!

The trip was an opportunity to grow a sense of camaraderie and community amongst the pupils as they tackled challenges together, such as a fear of heights or managing homesickness, with a newly developed resolution and resilience.

[T]hey called encouragement to each other, hung out and chatted, and together they took steps closer to being the thoughtful, independent adults we hope they can become.

This excursion also gave the students time to relax and play. The outdoor centre’s swimming pool that not only had a sound system but also art light projectors was yet another highlight of an action packed trip.

Trefoil are delighted to hear that the award granted enabled this group of boys to explore the outdoors, learn life skills and most importantly enjoy themselves on an adventure.
